The final weeks before pregnancy - particularly a first pregnancy - are full of emotion. Particularly the emotion that says, "When is this baby going to GET here?!" And the answer is always the same. "When the baby is ready!"
But actively preparing for the big day can help take the stress away.
- For example,
after you have a newborn in the house, you'll have
plenty of activities to fill your day, and you'll
probably be tired. So why not take this time to cook
and freeze some meals?
- You'll want to
share your good news with the world…so take the time
now to address the birth announcement envelopes.
- Wondering what
your life will be like once you come home? Why not
spend some time with a friend who has a small child.
They can share their experiences with you, and you can
become more aware of what's in store for your family.
- Now's the time to
buy a baby seat. Even if you won't be using a car
regularly, you'll need an approved safety seat to
bring your infant home from the hospital.
- You'll also need
baby clothes: eight stretch suits, six vests, socks, a
hat and mittens (because babies can scratch themselves
with their sharp fingernails). You'll need a changing
mat, a baby bath, a sling to keep your baby close
while you keep your arms free, and a monitor that will
allow you to listen in while baby sleeps.
- And now's a good
time to plan whether - and how - you will record the
birth. Are you comfortable with a video camera being
present? Or just still pictures? Or none at all?
It seems like the big day
will never arrive…but it will. And life's greatest gift
awaits on the other side!
